We come to the 4th running; this year nine countries, fourteen horses in all. Now then, we will introduce them in order. No. 1, from Japan, Mr C.B., 57 kilos—Up is Yoshinaga Masato, body weight 468 kilos. No. 10, from Japan, Katsuragi Ace, 57 kilos—Nishiura Katsuichi, 508 kilos. No. 12, from Japan, Symboli Rudolf, 55 kilos—Okabe Yukio, 474 kilos. A fresh sense of excitement. Gathered together, nine countries and fourteen horses will contest the 4th Japan Cup International Invitational, 2,400 meters. The 4th Japan Cup. This year, for the first time, a Japanese horse was sent off favorite. It is last year’s Triple Crown horse, Mr C.B. And this year’s Triple Crown horse, Symboli Rudolf, has also joined. Rudolf now goes slowly into the gate. He is composed. Only two weeks ago he captured the Kikuka yet you would not think so from how he is turned out. Looks like they’re all in at the gate. The handlers spread to left and right, and the 4th Japan Cup—Start!—we are underway! A very clean break. Mr C.B. is restrained. He snatches up the reins cleanly. And Rudolf is being held a touch as well. Who makes the lead—Katsuragi Ace as expected? As expected, Katsuragi Ace goes on. From the outside, Australia’s Bounty Hawk goes up. Down the middle, America’s Win goes. Win into second, and from the inside rail, France’s Esprit Du Nord is third Passing in fourth, Bounty Hawk currently fourth, and to the outer line goes Symboli Rudolf. The green silks—that is Symboli Rudolf. From the inside, with the top jockey Lester Piggott aboard, Strawberry Road goes as well. Just ahead of that, smoothly up goes Majesty’s Prince. After that, Welnor is tracking, taking a slightly outside path. That is Bounty Hawk. And Mr C.B., as usual, sets off solitary at the very rear. In front of C.B. is Diana Tholon. On the backstretch, Katsuragi Ace leads. He has stretched the advantage to 10 meters, 20 meters. In second is the American powerhouse, Win. In third, another powerhouse from France, Esprit Du Nord. And in the group behind that sits Symboli Rudolf. Shadowing Symboli Rudolf, there is Majesty’s Prince. And Bedtime is in that group as well. Right alongside Symboli Rudolf, Bedtime and Majesty’s Prince— strong rivals are biding their time. And Japan’s champion, Mr C.B., is still last and starting down the slope. Katsuragi Ace sets a bold pacesetting run. Still a margin of 20 meters. Still a margin of 20 meters. Win is currently second. Symboli Rudolf. And Strawberry Road is moving up. Strawberry Road also inching forward. Mr C.B. still last. Now, how far can Katsuragi Ace keep going? How far can Katsuragi Ace keep going? It is a big breakaway. A big breakaway! Bedtime is advancing early. Bedtime is coming on. And Symboli Rudolf in fifth, Mr C.B. is still last. Now inside the final 600! Round the 4th corner curve! Katsuragi’s break is blunted! Katsuragi, blunted! The world-class runners are driving on! The world’s powerhouses are closing in! Out of that pack, does Rudolf come? Rudolf! Strawberry Road! Rudolf! And Mr C.B. swings to the outside! Mr C.B. still mid-group! From here he quickens! Now takes the lead, Katsuragi Ace! Bedtime is surging! Bedtime is surging! Rudolf has come! Rudolf, hang in there! Katsuragi Ace has fought on! Katsuragi Ace is sticking on! Chasing Katsuragi Ace is Rudolf! Bedtime! Katsuragi surging! From the outside—Majesty’s Prince! Katsuragi Ace has won! Katsuragi Ace goes all the way! He knew the track! And he made the most of the inside advantage! Katsuragi Ace, splendidly, the first by a Japanese horse to capture the Japan Cup! A Japanese horse for the first time has won the Japan Cup. It was not either of the two Triple Crown horses, but the 10th favorite, Katsuragi Ace. With that distinctive long rein, leaving it to the horse’s desire to go— it was the victory of Nishiura Katsuichi. From the inside finishing strongly, the British gelding, Bedtime was second. Symboli Rudolf, after all, against the older-horse wall, just short, was third. Meanwhile, the Triple Crown horse Mr C.B. showed none of his trademark late run and finished 10th.

Symboli rudolf and Mr CB may be triple crown winners but there only one ACE for being the first Japanese horse to win the Japan Cup
The only JP horse who managed to beat two Triple Crowned horses in a single race besides Almond Eye
