From the paddock of the 12th running of the Japan Cup, we now bring you coverage. On this broadcast, paddock analysis is by Keiba Eight Fujimaki-san and Mukunoki-san. Above all, today’s condition is the most important, so we ask both of you for your insights. Thank you very much! First, we will report the changes in body weight. As for the foreign horses, we do not have those data, so we will report only today’s body weights. No. 2 Ikuno Dictus, 474 kilos. Up 12 kilos from the previous start. And Tokai Teio, 470 kilos. Down 2 kilos. Those were the body weights for the 14 horses. And No. 14, the horse everyone has been waiting to see return, Tokai Teio. Fujimaki-san, how do you view today’s condition? Of course, at the Tenno Sho (Autumn), the shoulder area felt, compared to before, a bit bony. Today again he is showing a bit of fussiness. Compared with last time, the firmness through the shoulder is better. Previously it was not this much… he’s a bit fidgety. “But compared with the Tenno Sho (Autumn), he seems much improved; he is walking in good spirits.” “I see.” “So compared with the Tenno Sho (Autumn), may we say you do feel he has progressed?” “That’s right.” This year marks the 12th Japan Cup. From Mary Doze in 1981, already 11 years have passed. This year’s field is 14. The 14 runners are now about to show their gallant figures on the course proper. Let us introduce them. Think back to that Derby last May, and we want him to be first to drive through the same 2,400 meters finish, Tokai Teio, Okabe Yukio. And prepared for the hard back-to-back run, we want to see the pride of Japan’s representative mare, Ikuno Dictus, Muramoto Yoshiyuki. With these 14 horses, the 12th Japan Cup will be contested this year. Now each horse has scattered as it pleases. Okawa-san, the one that has obligingly come out is the No. 1, this User Friendly. Out onto the course proper, this User Friendly shown at the top of the screen, please give us your analysis. Well, during the long work she had a blanket over the loin, so it was hard to grasp the whole picture, but compared with what I saw from the outside, much more, how shall I say, “She looks like a young lady,” “Right.” “She has speed.” “Now, Nohira-sensei is here, and it feels like a slightly larger Janis.” “I see.” “She has speed.” “Indeed.” she is going well along the backstretch, moving lightly, User Friendly. Now as for Japan, there is this determination by all means, can Tokai Teio raise the banner of a comeback today? Okawa-san, how did the Tokai Teio who came out onto the course proper look to you? Compared to the other day he has not drilled that much, If possible I would have preferred a bit more body weight, though. At about this weight, and besides last time, even before the race, he was overly keyed up. I see.
So this sort of state might be the best. That is how it looks to me. User Friendly, and Tokai Teio, we have just had comments from Okawa Keijiro-san on the two. From this year, it has been certified an international G1 race. We have reached the 12th running, the Japan Cup. As of 3:00 p.m., at Tokyo Racecourse, close to 164,000 fans have gathered. This year, from overseas, horses said to be the strongest in history have come. Seven invited horses; meeting them, seven from Japan. A total of 14. In the commentary box is Okawa Keijiro-san. Okawa-san, first, please tell us your impressions upon seeing this year’s foreign invitees. “Yes, in a word, it feels like the horses are well matched.” “I see.” “Yes.” What is regrettable, regrettable indeed, is that Mihono Bourbon retired from the battle line due to injury, and had that been different, the pace and the flow in running would have changed quite a bit, I think. Yes, Bourbon would absolutely have led, “and in that respect it would have made racing easier for the others too.” “I see.” Now then, for this year’s Japan Cup, may we hear your selections, Okawa-san? Yes, I will make No. 1 User Friendly the key. Around her, Naturalism and Let’s Elope, and I feel somehow it can be done with the Japanese horses, too. Among them, Yamanin Global, Hishi Masaru, “and in particular Tokai Teio looks very good today.” “I see.” We would very much like Tokai Teio to achieve the win, and at the start point is announcer Yoshida. Yoshida-san, please report the state of the horses just before the start and the latest situation. The favorite User Friendly is very composed. She seems keyed up. And Let’s Elope, and also Quest for Fame, these are also settled. As expected of 14 battle-hardened warriors, “they are filled with the will to go and fight.” “I see.” Now, starter is at the start point. The fanfare echoes around the course. Now, the official track condition, Yoshida-san. Specifically, what is the state of the turf? Please tell us briefly. The turf is completely dry. “However, the soil contains a touch of moisture.” “I see.” Now then, Okawa-san, as for the shape of the race, I cannot quite read it either. What do you think? I do not really know the other foreign horses, but the one to go will be Ikuno Dictus, “Ikuno Dictus.” “And taking over from her, Legacy World.” I think the race will proceed in that way. “I think Tokai Teio will also go forward.” “I see.” Loading appears to be going smoothly. Yoshida-san, about how many remain? About seven remain. Any horse strongly refusing the stall? “We can say it is an extremely smooth loading.” “I see.” Now Tokai Teio, Okabe. Will it be a comeback? And this is User Friendly, Europe’s Horse of the Year this season. “Now the one…” “Tokai Teio, one remaining.” “I see,” “Yes.” Thirteen are already in the stalls. On the far outside, Tokai Teio. Please recall that Derby last year. Now Tokai Teio is in. The gates are open! Start—we are underway! Heading to the 1st corner, now the battle for the lead. Who will go? Hashiru Shogun, and Legacy World. From the same Toyama stable, Bourbon’s double, and Legacy World boldly takes the lead. Hashiru Shogun second, and Dr Devious third. Pink cap, Tokai Teio also smoothly from the outside, he is in the fourth-place group. On the inside of Tokai Teio, Yamanin Global. In this formation of 14, they curve the 1st corner. To the front went Legacy World. Koyauchi is in front and sets the pace. From the outside, Hashiru Shogun. Slipping through on the inside, Dr Devious. Watching that, User Friendly. White cap, User—early, early. From the front, now third, drawing alongside. Tokai Teio at present fifth. Now, changes in the running order are a bit sharp, they come onto the backstretch. Two are in front, side by side, Dr Devious on the outside, Legacy World on the inside. Behind, set solidly, User Friendly is now third. Behind that, the pack opens a touch; here is Hashiru Shogun, and punching up on the outside comes Tokai Teio, then Ikuno Dictus. Then the two in the same bracket, Naturalism, Yamanin Global. Then Vert Amande. From the rear comes Let’s Elope, then Let’s Go Tarquin, then Quest for Fame, No. 13 Hishi Masaru, waiting quietly at the back. Hishi Masaru is last. They climb the rise at the 3rd corner, and now begin the downhill. In front, Legacy World still, Legacy World leads. Dr Devious, Dr Devious is second. User Friendly is third. Tokai Teio, Okabe smoothly goes by—closing in. Now, from the 3rd corner to the 4th corner. The leader remains Legacy World, Legacy World is sticking on. User Friendly is third. Midway between the 3rd and 4th corner, past the big zelkova. Legacy World in front, then Dr Devious second, User Friendly third, Pink cap, Tokai Teio is coming up! Tokai Teio is coming up! Naturalism poised to strike! The 4th corner curve! In the middle of the home straight, into the last 500! Go on, Legacy! And outside there, User Friendly! On the inside, Naturalism! Naturalism is coming! And Tokai Teio—does he burst through? Down to the last 400! The 14 have fanned across in a line! Naturalism! And Tokai Teio! Tokai Teio is fighting on! From the far outside, diving in! Tokai Teio! Naturalism! Here he comes! Tokai Teio! Is it Tokai Teio? From there, Naturalism! Naturalism! It’s Tokai! It’s Tokai Teio! He’s gone by! Is it Tokai Teio? Or Naturalism? It’s Tokai Teio! Tokai Teio! Okabe did it! It’s Tokai Teio! He has taken on the foreigners’ strong brigade, he is back, Tokai Teio! Winning time 2 minutes 24.6. Well Okawa-san, in front of the finish, that made us tense up a bit. “Indeed, splendid.” “Yes.” Above all, for Tokai Teio, his settling today, that especially stood out, he also settled through the run. Perhaps he recalled that Derby last year. Did he think of it again? Tokai Teio held off the late charge of No. 7 Naturalism. He held off his late charge. Okabe’s good ride, I think we should praise it. Yes, Mr. Okabe’s good ride “felt like he paid back the Tenno Sho, that is the impression I get.” “That’s right.” Even so, the greatest credit, goes to the people behind the scenes. Despite Tokai Teio’s poor Tenno Sho, they did not lose heart, this time they changed the way they tuned him, and it proved better after seeing him through the rough patch. Close to 170,000 have packed Tokyo Racecourse, and with great applause, Okabe heads toward the goal. “Well, Okawa-san, in the 5th running, his father Rudolf won this race, and father and son have done it in this international race.” “That’s right.” When you think about it, what Tokai Teio lost were, the Tenno Sho Spring and the Tenno Sho Autumn. The spring Tenno Sho was 3,200, the distance was long. Last time the horse was a bit over-excited, and he went at an over-pace. That being so, indeed, he was an undefeated Derby horse. With expectations that high, that is only natural, and that is the kind of horse he is. As long as we race in Japan, it is only natural that Japanese horses should win. There is also the home-ground advantage, and splendidly, said to be the strongest in history, he has repelled the foreign invitees, the 12th Japan Cup, Tokai Teio, with Okabe Yukio, has won.

  1. This what i waiting for because this not showed on the anime, how teio bring japan win for japan cup, after 7 years japan cup without japan horse that win japan cup

  2. The Missing Piece of the Miracle

Too bad they couldn't include this race due to pacing issues (and would have been incredibly cruel; since after this race was Teio's lowest point)

  3. I'm sorry, but why the jockey that came second was uncontrollably hitting the horse the last meters? Like I get it, but bro 😭😭

  4. Agnes Digital's Hong Kong Cup 2001 please.
Probably the most underappreciated international G1 win ever imho.

  5. Let's Elope (number 10 on saddle, silks are yellow and green stripes), like Mayano Top Gun, TM Opera O and Makitanefukukitaru is a grandchild of Blushing Groom (BG is the reason they are all shown with orange hair as umas; BG was CHESTNUT in a very brassy way).
They also had a fantastic racer fellow grandchild of Blushing Groom in Tawriffic, who won the 1989 Melborune Cup (Australia's top G1 long race).

Such a shame Let's Elope didn't really have any noteworthy kids.

  6. 0:32 I really like how the characters models appear a little faded, as if they were part of the original recording. Great attention to detail!
